Customers’ Health & Safety Responsibilities
Proper maintenance of industrial and commercial doors is a legal requirement under several key regulations, including:
- Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 (Regulation 5)
- Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (Regulation 5)
- Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
These laws place a duty on employers to safeguard the health and safety of employees and others by ensuring all doors and related equipment are properly maintained.
Specifically, employers must:
- Maintain doors and equipment at suitable intervals, promptly remedy dangerous defects, and keep accurate maintenance records.
- Ensure work equipment, including power-operated doors, is kept in efficient working order and good repair.
- Keep maintenance logs up to date and ensure maintenance is performed by adequately trained personnel.
- Maintain fire exit and fire compartmentation doors under a suitable system of maintenance to safeguard occupants.
Customers should ensure that maintenance is carried out regularly by competent professionals to meet legal standards and protect both users and maintenance staff.
